She really enjoyed using the professionally digitized fonts that come included with the software and she created a few Valentine’s themed designs that you can access by clicking the button at the end of this article.

I had a chat to Laura to find out more about her experience with the Hatch Embroidery software.

How long have you been using Hatch Embroidery for?

As one of my New Year’s Resolutions, I decided to start learning the ropes of the software and how to set up and operate the embroidery machine. Others stitch embroidery stories.

Singapore-based embroidery business owner Kevin Loh, founder of K&K Embroidery & Gifts, does both, especially when it comes to pets. Known for his highly detailed photorealistic dog portraits, Kevin has built a growing business that blends artistry, skill, and deep emotional connection. Today, nearly 90% of his library consists of dog designs, carefully digitized by hand.

But his journey into pet embroidery didn’t begin with expertise. It began with a memorial.

In 2022, a customer asked Kevin to create a patch commemorating two beloved dogs that had passed away. At the time, he hadn’t started digitizing animals, so he outsourced the design. Although the customer was pleased, Kevin felt there was room for improvement. That experience sparked something unexpected: a determination to learn how to digitize animals himself, not just adequately, but beautifully.

What followed was a period of intense learning and experimentation. Kevin studied fur textures, shading, highlights, and the small facial details that bring pets to life. Through trial and practice, he refined a technique that blends realism with stitch efficiency. Today, his pet portraits are instantly recognizable: expressive eyes, soft layered fur, and an artistic style that feels both precise and heartfelt.

While Kevin’s specialty lies in full-color, photorealistic designs, his creativity extends far beyond advanced digitizing. He also enjoys creating beginner-friendly single-color pet outline designs. They are charming, versatile, and fast to stitch.

What Kevin Says About Hatch

"I started looking for embroidery software when I launched my business in 2019. Kevin emphasizes:

Smooth fabric tension

A firm hoop

Proper design alignment

Once stitched, gently tear away the stabilizer and protect your embroidery by pressing only the edges.

Step 2: Centre the Design on the Canvas Frame

This is where Kevin’s mathematical precision shines.

Using a 20 × 20 cm stretched canvas, he provides exact spacing measurements so your embroidery sits perfectly centered. He walks you through calculating side spacing based on design width, frame border and thickness, and shows how to mark these positions with tailor’s chalk for accuracy.

It’s one of the clearest, most beginner-friendly centering guides you’ll find.

Step 3: Stretch & Staple the Fabric

With the fabric centered, Kevin guides you through anchoring the fabric:

Staple the first side.

Pull firmly and secure the opposite side.

Alternate top and bottom for even tension.

Adjust if needed. He even teaches how to remove staples safely.

This creates a smooth, crease-free surface worthy of display.

Step 4: Fold & Secure the Corners

Kevin demonstrates how to fold corners “like wrapping a gift,” using tweezers for tricky edges. Each corner is secured neatly, trimmed, and tightened to give the frame clean lines and a professional finish.

Step 5: Displaying Your Finished Piece

For hanging, Kevin recommends a sawtooth hanger, attached to the inner top edge of the wooden frame. Adhesives aren’t reliable with fully wrapped fabric and Kevin ensures your artwork stays safe on the wall.

Why This Project Matters

Not only does Kevin share a generous free design, he also provides a technique that empowers any embroiderer - beginner or experienced - to create meaningful, display-worthy art. By night I flex my creative muscles with lots of sewing, machine embroidery, and laser work! While I love programming, I do like to get a little more hands-on creative as a way to wind down at the end of the day. I am a mom of two beautiful daughters – oh! and four cats! I’ve been sewing and crafting since I was about 10 years old, only taking a little time off after starting a family. I picked it back up again in 2003, which is around the time I started Fierce Kitten Studio. I fell in love with making handbags, specifically handbags with machine embroidered embellishments! I only had a 100mm x 100mm work area at the time, but I made it work. I had no clue how to digitize until 2015 when I upgraded to a slightly bigger combination machine and again used the software provided by the dealer. It was in 2016 when I got my hands on the Wilcom software that was made for Janome. That was when I really started to figure things out. It was so intuitive and gave me the confidence to make more complex designs! The user interface shows me all of the information, is fast/responsive, and not terribly overwhelming. Let’s also not forget to mention the plethora of video tutorials and content available from which to learn! My FAVORITE tool is the Player. I like to optimize the stitch path as best as possible, so I spend a lot of time in the Player scrubbing the timeline back and forth to make sure I don’t insert too many unnecessary jumps or start/stop in the wrong location.

What’s the best advice you can give to fellow embroiderers or people who are just starting out?

Don’t bite off more than you can chew at first!

Halloween is the perfect excuse to get creative with your embroidery machine! This year, why not make your own ITH Halloween masks using Hatch Embroidery and vinyl? They’re fun, fast, and completely customizable - perfect for parties, trick-or-treating, or even themed photo booths.

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through how we digitized, cut, and stitched our Halloween masks using Hatch Embroidery and a Brother cutting machine. You’ll also pick up some great tips for working with vinyl and creating your own cutting files from embroidery designs.

Step 1: Digitizing Your ITH Halloween Masks

When designing ITH projects like these ITH Halloween masks, the key is to work backwards, start by thinking about how you want the finished mask to look and feel, and then digitize with that in mind.

We began by creating the overall mask shape and adding texture and detail using motif fills and open density stitching. Vinyl is not as forgiving as fabric; too many needle penetrations can perforate it and cause tearing. That’s why it’s important to keep your stitching open and light. Using decorative motifs or running stitch details instead of dense fills gives your mask that spooky texture without compromising durability.

Think of it like planning an applique. You want to visualize each layer and stitch sequence carefully before you start sewing.

Step 2: Creating the Cutting File (SVG)

Once your design looks right in Hatch Embroidery, it’s time to generate the cutting file for your Brother machine.

To do this, select all the objects that form the mask outline. Then go to Create Outline and Offset and choose a 0 offset. This creates a perfect outline around your design. With this outline selected, you can export it as an SVG file ready to load into your Brother cutting software.

This outline serves two purposes:

1. As a cutting file for your vinyl, if you’re using an electronic cutter.

2. As a placement line in your embroidery sequence, if you prefer to cut manually.

If you plan to use the outline for placement, simply move that object to the beginning of your stitch sequence. That way, the placement line will stitch first when you run the design.

You can apply this same technique to any existing design in Hatch Embroidery. It’s especially useful for turning applique designs into ITH projects or when you want precision-cut shapes for materials like vinyl, felt, or cork.

Step 3: Organizing Your Design for Stitch-Out

A little organization goes a long way during stitch-out. Before exporting your design, open the Design Information panel in Hatch Embroidery. Under Thread Colors, rename each color block or element (for example, “Placement Line”, “Cover Stitch”).

When you print your worksheet, make sure Color Sequence is checked so you can easily follow along during stitching. This simple habit saves confusion at the machine and helps you keep track of each element, especially for layered designs like masks.

Step 4: Cutting the Vinyl

For this ITH Halloween masks project, we cut our vinyl using a Brother cutting machine. It’s fast, accurate, and gives perfectly crisp edges. If you don’t have a cutter, you can absolutely treat it like an applique - stitch your placement line, lay your vinyl on top, and carefully trim around the outline with small sharp scissors.

Whichever method you use, vinyl tends to shift slightly during embroidery. To help hold it in place, lightly spray the back of the vinyl with temporary spray adhesive before stitching. This keeps everything secure and smooth while your machine runs.

Step 5: Setting Up for Stitch-Out

For ITH projects like these ITH Halloween masks, a tearaway stabilizer works best. Hoop a single layer tightly and make sure it’s smooth and wrinkle-free.

We used white stabilizer for our masks, but we quickly realized that black stabilizer would make the edges look even more crisp, especially when working with darker vinyls. If you only have white on hand, you can also run a black permanent marker along the outer edge of your finished mask to hide any visible white edges. It’s a quick and easy trick for a more professional finish.

Step 6: Stitching the Masks

Load your design into your embroidery machine and start with the placement line if you’ve added one. Then lay your vinyl on the hoop (right side up) and secure it with a light spray of adhesive.

Run your embroidery sequence following your color worksheet. Because vinyl doesn’t fray, you won’t need any satin borders or finishing seams, but be sure to use a slightly longer stitch length for decorative areas to reduce perforation.

When the embroidery is complete, carefully remove the project from the hoop and tear away the stabilizer.

For the eye openings or elastic holes, use a small sharp pair of scissors or a buttonhole chisel to cut them open. These details can be difficult to access with a seam ripper, so take your time and be precise.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Thread elastic or ribbon through the buttonholes, and your ITH Halloween masks are ready to wear!

You can personalize each mask with different vinyl colors, stitches, or even glitter accents. Try metallic threads for a glamorous witch, or black vinyl with orange stitching for a classic pumpkin look. Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can adapt it to create animal masks, superhero masks, or even masquerade-style designs, all in-the-hoop!

Final Thoughts

Creating ITH Halloween masks with Hatch Embroidery is a fantastic way to explore both *digitizing and crafting techniques. By combining your embroidery skills with vinyl and cutting technology, you can produce professional-looking accessories that are sturdy, stylish, and fun.

Best of all, the workflow you’ve learned - from digitizing the outline and exporting SVGs to stitching with vinyl - can be applied to countless other ITH projects. Whether it’s key fobs, ornaments, or costume pieces, Hatch Embroidery gives you the flexibility to turn your creative ideas into perfectly stitched, ready-to-wear designs.

So fire up your embroidery machine, grab some spooky vinyl, and get ready to stitch up Halloween magic right in the hoop!

🎥 Watch the recorded YouTube Live

Access the Free designs

Feeling Inspired?

Digitizing animals in Hatch Embroidery Digitizer is one of the most rewarding ways to personalise your embroidery projects. Whether you’re recreating your own pet or working from a client’s photo, Hatch gives you a range of tools to turn images into stitches that feel alive.

In this article, we’ll focus on two highly versatile and popular styles for animal embroidery:

1. Appliqué Dog: for bold shapes, fabric textures, and reduced stitch counts.

2. Furry Dog: for realistic texture and shading that mimics the softness of fur.

We’ll use the same dog artwork for both designs to show how your digitizing choices can completely change the look and feel of a piece.

The embroidery designs were based on this adorable pup, Cosmo.

Appliqué Dog – Adding Fabric for Texture and Colour

The appliqué version of our dog uses a simplified image to keep the design clean and fabric-friendly. This approach lets you introduce fabric textures and patterns, reduce stitch density, and make the design pop without excessive embroidery time.

Why Choose Appliqué for Animals?

Appliqué works wonderfully for animals with large areas of solid colour. It allows you to bring in fabric patterns and textures that add charm, save thread, and cut down on stitching time, perfect for quilts, clothing, and decorative items.

Steps to Create the Appliqué Dog in Hatch:

1. Set Up Your Artwork

Start by importing your simplified dog image into Hatch. Position it on your workspace, ready for outlining.

2. Digitize Appliqué

Select the Digitize Appliqué tool.

Carefully outline the dog’s main shape.

Under Properties, choose:

Style: Precut

Cover: Satin

Width: 2.5 mm

3. Add Details

Use Open and Closed shapes to digitize features like the eyes, ears, and facial markings.

For fabric areas, apply Tatami pattern #61 with no underlay (since it will sit on top of the applique fabric).

For backstitch and satin detail work, add underlays for durability and definition.

4. Prepare for Cutting

If you’re using a fabric cutting machine (e.g., Brother ScanNCut), export the cutting file:

File > Export Cutting > Appliquéx Shapes (SVG) > Export To (select your folder) > Export.

This generates an SVG file you can load into your cutter for perfectly shaped fabric pieces.

Pro Tip: Choosing a slightly contrasting fabric can make animal features stand out more and add visual interest to your design.

Furry Dog – Capturing Realism with Stitch Effects

The furry version of the dog is where Hatch’s texturing tools really shine. By layering colours and applying special stitch effects, you can create a design with depth, softness, and lifelike character.

Why Choose a Fur Texture Style?

If you want to capture the unique personality of a pet, from the subtle colour changes in their coat to the softness of their fur, this style is unbeatable. It’s ideal for cushion covers, framed embroidery art, or any project where detail is the star.

Steps to Create the Furry Dog in Hatch:

1. Digitize the Base Shape

Start by digitizing the dog’s full silhouette using Tatami fill #61. This will be your base layer.

2. Add Fur Texture

In Object Properties, check Hand Stitch Effect, then select Both Sides Feather Edge.

This softens the edges, creating a natural, fur-like outline.

3. Layer the Shading

Build up colour in stages, starting with the darkest shade of the coat.

Add progressively lighter layers to create depth and highlight areas.

Think about the direction of fur growth—your stitch angles should follow it.

4. Add Details Last

The eyes, nose, and mouth should be digitized as the final objects so they sit cleanly above all fur layers. This keeps the expression crisp and lifelike.

Pro Tip: Save time by reusing stitch settings - right-click an object you’ve set up, select Copy Object Properties, then apply them to new objects. This ensures consistency in your fur texture without having to reconfigure settings each time.

Comparing the Two Styles

Even though both versions start from the same dog artwork, the results are dramatically different:

Appliqué Dog gives you bold shapes, playful fabric choices, and reduced stitch counts. It's great for garments and soft furnishings.

Furry Dog offers rich, textured realism, making it ideal for display pieces or high-end custom embroidery.

Your choice will depend on the project’s purpose, fabric, and desired effect. In some cases, you may even combine the two, using applique for the main body and fur effects on selected areas.

Why Hatch Embroidery Digitizer Makes It Easy

Hatch’s built-in tools simplify what could otherwise be a complex process:

Digitize Appliqué Tool: fast, accurate outlines for fabric placement.

Tatami Patterns & Fill Options: control texture and stitch direction.

Hand Stitch Effect & Feather Edge: for natural fur transitions.

Export Cutting Files (SVG): for precise appliqué shapes using cutting machines.

Copy/Apply Object Properties: to maintain a consistent look across multiple elements.

These tools mean you can focus on creativity instead of wrestling with settings.

Final Thoughts

Digitizing animals is more than just translating an image into stitches, it’s about choosing the right style to suit your project. With Hatch Embroidery Digitizer, you can easily take the same artwork and adapt it for different purposes.

The Appliqué Dog offers simplicity, speed, and fabric creativity, while the Furry Dog gives depth, realism, and a professional finish that’s hard to match.

Whichever style you choose, the process is a chance to experiment, learn, and produce something truly personal. Once you master these two techniques, you’ll be able to bring any pet design to life, whether it’s a playful applique for a quilt or a lifelike portrait for a framed keepsake.

Access the Free designs

Feeling Inspired? Try It Yourself!

Whether you're inspired by the seasons or dreaming up your own theme, Hatch Embroidery Digitizer gives you all the tools to turn your vision into a stitched work of art. From motif fills to personalized lettering and quilting tools, the possibilities are as endless as your creativity.

We’d love to see what you make.
Creating Machine Embroidered Quilt Blocks for All Seasons

There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating individual quilt blocks that stand on their own as finished pieces, especially when every detail is designed and stitched by you. In this project, we used Hatch Embroidery to design and stitch

There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating individual quilt blocks that stand on their own as finished pieces, especially when every detail is designed and stitched by you. In this project, we used Hatch Embroidery to design and stitch four free-standing seasonal quilt blocks, each representing Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter.

From digitizing expressive motifs to adding embroidered borders and personalized bindings, each block was completed as its own mini quilt. With thoughtful planning, creative use of stitch types, and powerful tools in Hatch, we ended up with a cohesive set of seasonal blocks that are both decorative and meaningful.

Here’s how we brought them to life, from the first design idea to the final stitched result.

Digitizing the Quilt Blocks and Borders in Hatch Embroidery

Each of the four quilt blocks was digitized individually in Hatch Embroidery, with a unique design inspired by one of the seasons. Rather than relying on literal elements or text, we brought the essence of each season to life through thoughtful use of colors, shapes, patterns, and textures.

What We Used:

Contour Stitch: This dynamic stitch was perfect for adding soft, flowing lines and natural movement to each design, ideal for florals, leaves, or snowdrift-inspired patterns.

Motif Fills: Each block featured a variety of motif fills, chosen specifically to reflect seasonal feelings, floral for Spring, leafy for Summer, warm for Autumn, and delicate and cool for Winter.

Ambience Quilting: To give each block depth without crowding the design, we used Hatch’s Ambience Quilting tool to generate decorative background quilting automatically. This made the blocks feel rich and complete, even before adding borders or final assembly.

Lettering: Text was not added to the blocks themselves, instead, the seasonal words were reserved for the final binding stage, allowing the art in each block to speak for itself.

Each block and each of its four border pieces (top, bottom, left, right) was digitized separately. This allowed us full control over layout, stitch density, and finishing.

Stitching: Blocks and Borders Hooped Separately

After digitizing, we stitched out all components: four blocks and their surrounding borders, each hooped and stitched individually.

This process offered greater precision during hooping and ensured each element maintained its shape and stability.

Stitching Tips:

Stabilizer & Fabric Choice: We used a consistent background fabric and cut-away stabilizer for all pieces. Batting was included to give the finished quilt body and softness.

Thread Consistency: While each block used different colors to match the seasonal mood, we worked from a unified palette. This helped the blocks feel cohesive while still allowing each to have its own personality.

Stitch Tests First: Because motif fills and contour stitches behave differently depending on fabric and density, we ran test stitch-outs to make sure each block looked polished and properly balanced.

Assembling the Blocks and Borders

With each block and its four borders complete, we began the layout and assembly.

Each block was framed by its own embroidered border pieces, sewn in a picture frame style: top, bottom, left, and right. The borders added visual space around the central motif, enhancing its impact and giving the blocks a clean, structured format.

Assembly Tips:

Rotary Cutter for Precision: A cutting wheel was essential for trimming each piece cleanly and evenly. Straight edges made stitching much smoother and ensured all blocks aligned perfectly.

Remove Batting from Seams: Before joining borders to blocks (and blocks to each other if you are creating a 4 block quilt), we trimmed away the batting from seam allowances. This kept the final quilt much flatter and easier to work with.

Alternate Seam Directions: Nesting the seams alternating which way each seam was pressed—reduced bulk and helped everything sit more evenly when layered.

Binding: Final Touches That Tie It All Together

We created individual bindings around each block, adding the final design element that brought everything full circle.

The bindings were made from the same fabric as the quilt blocks to maintain a seamless look. But what truly set them apart were two finishing touches:

Seasonal Lettering: Using Hatch’s Lettering tools, we embroidered the name of each season Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter — into the binding for each block. This was the only place the text appeared, allowing the blocks themselves to remain purely visual and open to interpretation.

Quilting with Ambience Quilting: Around each embroidered season name, we used Ambience Quilting to create subtle concentric stitch patterns. These circular ripples framed the lettering beautifully and added extra dimension to the binding without overwhelming the design.

Why We Loved This Project (and Hatch Embroidery)

These quilt blocks were more than a seasonal showcase, this project was an opportunity to explore how far you can go with embroidery design using Hatch. The software allowed us to:

Create detailed and expressive seasonal designs

Add borders and binding with precision

Use built-in features like Ambience Quilting and Lettering for custom finishing

Control every aspect of the quilt blocks' visual language, from fill textures to final framing

And because every element was stitched separately, the project was flexible, modular, and easy to adapt for future ideas.

Tip: Another option is to stitch the four blocks (or more) together for a larger size quilt. Make sure you line the tree trunks correctly.

Feeling Inspired? Try It Yourself!

Whether you're inspired by the seasons or dreaming up your own theme, Hatch Embroidery Digitizer gives you all the tools to turn your vision into a stitched work of art.

Creating line art portraits with Hatch Embroidery software is a rewarding way to transform cherished photographs into timeless embroidered keepsakes. Whether you're crafting a heartfelt Mother's Day gift or preserving a special memory, Hatch Embroidery's powerful tools - Redwork and Branching - enable you to produce elegant, clean linework embroidery designs with ease.

Why Choose Line Art for Embroidery?

Line art, characterized by its simplicity and clarity, is ideal for embroidery. It focuses on outlines and contours, making it perfect for capturing the essence of a photograph without overwhelming details. This style enhances the visual appeal and ensures efficient stitching, reducing thread usage and machine time, which are just a few reasons we love linework embroidery.

Getting Started: Preparing Your Photograph

Select a Clear Image: Choose a photograph with good lighting and distinct features.

Convert to Line Art: Use image editing software to trace the main outlines, converting the photo into a line drawing.

Import into Hatch: Save your line art as a compatible file and import it into Hatch Embroidery.

Utilizing Hatch's Linework Embroidery Tools

Redwork Tool

The Redwork tool in Hatch Embroidery is designed for creating designs that mimic traditional hand embroidery. It automatically sequences and groups selected outline objects, ensuring that the entry and exit points coincide, which minimizes jump stitches and trims. This tool is best suited for designs composed solely of outline stitches like Single Run, Triple Run, Backstitch, and Stemstitch.

To use Redwork:

Select the outlines and click the Redwork tool.

Follow the prompts to set the entry point; the exit point will be the same.

This process creates a cohesive design that is efficient to stitch and visually appealing.

Branching Tool

For more complex designs that include overlapping elements or filled objects, the Branching tool is ideal. It sequences and groups selected embroidery objects, minimizing connectors and optimizing the stitching path. This tool is particularly useful when dealing with designs that have separate entry and exit points.

To apply Branching:

Select all objects comprising the design.

Click the Branching tool.

Set the entry and exit points manually or press Enter twice to let the software determine them automatically.

This feature ensures a smooth stitching process, reducing unnecessary jumps and trims.

Adding Decorative Elements

Enhance your line art portrait by incorporating decorative elements such as flowers, stars, or personalized text. These additions can be digitized using Hatch's various tools and integrated seamlessly into your design. Remember to consider the overall composition and balance to maintain the portrait's focus.

Finalizing and Stitching

Preview Your Design: Use Hatch's simulation features to preview the stitching sequence and make necessary adjustments.

Save and Export: Once satisfied, save your design and export it in the appropriate format for your embroidery machine.

Test Stitch: Perform a test stitch on a similar fabric to ensure the design translates well from screen to fabric.

Finalize: Make any final adjustments based on the test stitch results, and proceed to embroider your final piece.

Conclusion

Transforming photographs into linework embroidery art portraits using Hatch Embroidery software is a creative and meaningful endeavor. By leveraging tools like Redwork and Branching, you can produce designs that are both beautiful and efficient to stitch. Whether for a special occasion like Mother's Day or as a personal keepsake, these embroidered portraits are sure to be cherished for years to come.

For more detailed tutorials and resources, consider exploring the Hatch Embroidery Academy, which offers a range of courses to enhance your linework embroidery skills.

Resources

Blogs:

https://hatchembroidery.com/resources/blog/create-beautiful-ethereal-embroidery-designs-with-the-amazing-redwork-tool

https://hatchembroidery.com/resources/blog/unleash-your-inner-embroidery-artist-with-redwork

https://hatchembroidery.com/resources/blog/halloween-linework-napkins

YouTube:

Hatch Embroidery Part 20 - Redwork https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92SaDlPlbCc&t=36s

Redwork Tool in Hatch Embroidery 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qHLU5t2sEo

Online User Guide:

Branching: https://hatch.embroideryhelp.net/v3/en/OnlineHelp/Hints/hints_digitize/Branching.htm

Redwork: https://hatch.embroideryhelp.net/v3/en/OnlineHelp/Digitizing/digitize_advanced/Create_redwork.htm

Creating the Featured Linework Embroidery Rabbit & Mother and Child Designs

Preparing the artwork

Before bringing the images into Hatch, the photos were first converted into simple linework drawings. While this step isn’t strictly required, it’s a helpful way to visualize how a photograph or sketch can be translated into clean, embroidery-ready outlines. It also allows for greater control over the final design and helps simplify the digitizing process.

Digitizing the design

We used the Digitized Open Shape tool paired with a Backstitch to trace all the line elements. Once the outlines were complete, we applied the Redwork tool to streamline the stitching sequence and eliminate unnecessary trims — a simple yet effective way to keep the design clean and efficient.

Stitching out the design

Thread choice can also add a unique character to each piece. The Mother & Child portrait was stitched using Burmilana thread, giving it a soft, textured finish perfect for a heartfelt design. Meanwhile, the Rabbit was embroidered with classic Rayon Viscose, offering a smooth, high-sheen result ideal for fine detail and contrast.

Access Free designs

Happy stitching! ✨

The definite choice when selecting embroidery software

Hatch Embroidery software is a comprehensive embroidery design solution that offers a range of tools and features for both beginners and seasoned embroiderers.

Here’s why it's a great choice:

User-Friendly Interface: The software is designed with a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for anyone to start creating beautiful embroidery designs, regardless of their experience level.

Powerful Editing Tools: It provides powerful editing tools that allow users to resize, edit, and adjust embroidery designs with precision. In this blog post, we will guide you through a fun and creative Easter Bunny cutlery holder project, which we designed using the Buttonholes Tool in Hatch Embroidery Software. This tool allowed us to create a personalized and functional item that not only holds utensils but also adds a festive touch to your spring celebrations.

Materials Needed:

Fabric

Embroidery thread

Interfacing

Hatch Embroidery software

Embroidery machine

Scissors

The Power of the Buttonholes Tool in Hatch Embroidery Software

One of the many versatile features in Hatch Embroidery Software is the Buttonholes Tool, which provides users with the ability to create custom buttonholes quickly and precisely. This tool is perfect for adding functional details to embroidery projects, especially when you want to create loops or openings to hold items like buttons or, in our case, cutlery.

The feature we wanted to highlight was the Buttonhole, and we used a motif run to make it more decorative. Hatch allows users to select from various types of buttonholes, adjust their size, and customize the stitch style and density. This ensures a perfect fit and a visually appealing finish.

To create a buttonhole:

Select a decorative fabric depending on the weight.

Iron on an interfacing to help with fraying and ease of cutting.

Create the buttonhole to the required size. This will assist in selecting the appropriate motif.

Resequence the motif so it stitches before the buttonhole for a clean and polished look.

Designing the Easter Bunny Cutlery Holder

We wanted a project that was both functional and adorable, making this Easter Bunny cutlery holder the perfect choice! The soft pink gingham fabric provided a delightful spring aesthetic, while the decorative buttonhole loops ensured the utensils were securely in place.

The design options are endless—you can create an outline of any shape, whether it's a bunny, flowers, or an Easter egg. The outline of the shape can also vary, using different stitch types such as run stitch, backstitch, or motif run.

To enhance the design and facilitate cutting:

Create an offset from your design to ensure a neater cutout.

Slip a matching piece of fabric the same size as your design under the hoop and use a matching bobbin. This way, when the design is finished and cut out, you can’t tell the front from the back.

Embroidery Process

With the design in place, we moved on to the embroidery phase. Hatch Embroidery Digitizer made it easy to control the stitch types and densities. We used a running stitch for the bunny’s outline and an offset stitch for cutting, along with a motif run for the buttonhole loops. This combination ensured a delicate and decorative finish while maintaining a clean and functional design.

Once the embroidery was complete, the buttonholes were carefully placed and stitched, ensuring they didn’t interfere with the overall aesthetic but remained functional.

Assembling the Cutlery Holder

Once the embroidery was finished, we cut out the bunny shapes. The buttonhole loops were then used to secure the cutlery, adding a unique touch to each place setting.

Tip: Put a vertical pin at the end of the buttonhole before cutting it with an unpicker. This prevents you from making the hole too big and cutting into the vertical stitches. You could also use a buttonhole chisel or scissors to cut the buttonholes open.

Final Thoughts

Using Hatch Embroidery’s Buttonholes Tool allowed us to create this beautiful yet practical Easter Bunny cutlery holder project that enhances table settings while showcasing the versatility of the software. Whether you're designing an Easter project or personalizing other items, this tool is invaluable for adding functional details with a decorative flair.

The Easter Bunny cutlery holder is a perfect example of how you can blend creativity with functionality, and we hope this inspires you to try your own festive embroidery creations this spring!

FREE Design

Access the Easter Bunny design by clicking the button below.

Access Free design

Happy Easter and happy stitching! 🍀✨
