We began by creating the overall mask shape and adding texture and detail using motif fills and open density stitching. Vinyl is not as forgiving as fabric; too many needle penetrations can perforate it and cause tearing. That’s why it’s important to keep your stitching open and light. Using decorative motifs or running stitch details instead of dense fills gives your mask that spooky texture without compromising durability.

Think of it like planning an applique. You want to visualize each layer and stitch sequence carefully before you start sewing.

Step 2: Creating the Cutting File (SVG)

Once your design looks right in Hatch Embroidery, it’s time to generate the cutting file for your Brother machine.

To do this, select all the objects that form the mask outline. Then go to Create Outline and Offset and choose a 0 offset. This creates a perfect outline around your design. With this outline selected, you can export it as an SVG file ready to load into your Brother cutting software.

This outline serves two purposes:

1. As a cutting file for your vinyl, if you’re using an electronic cutter.

2. As a placement line in your embroidery sequence, if you prefer to cut manually.

If you plan to use the outline for placement, simply move that object to the beginning of your stitch sequence. That way, the placement line will stitch first when you run the design.

You can apply this same technique to any existing design in Hatch Embroidery. It’s especially useful for turning applique designs into ITH projects or when you want precision-cut shapes for materials like vinyl, felt, or cork.

Step 3: Organizing Your Design for Stitch-Out

A little organization goes a long way during stitch-out. Before exporting your design, open the Design Information panel in Hatch Embroidery. Under Thread Colors, rename each color block or element (for example, “Placement Line”, “Cover Stitch”).

When you print your worksheet, make sure Color Sequence is checked so you can easily follow along during stitching. This simple habit saves confusion at the machine and helps you keep track of each element, especially for layered designs like masks.

Whichever method you use, vinyl tends to shift slightly during embroidery. To help hold it in place, lightly spray the back of the vinyl with temporary spray adhesive before stitching. This keeps everything secure and smooth while your machine runs.

Step 5: Setting Up for Stitch-Out

For ITH projects like these ITH Halloween masks, a tearaway stabilizer works best. Hoop a single layer tightly and make sure it’s smooth and wrinkle-free.

We used white stabilizer for our masks, but we quickly realized that black stabilizer would make the edges look even more crisp, especially when working with darker vinyls. If you only have white on hand, you can also run a black permanent marker along the outer edge of your finished mask to hide any visible white edges. It’s a quick and easy trick for a more professional finish.

Step 6: Stitching the Masks

Load your design into your embroidery machine and start with the placement line if you’ve added one. Then lay your vinyl on the hoop (right side up) and secure it with a light spray of adhesive.

Run your embroidery sequence following your color worksheet. Because vinyl doesn’t fray, you won’t need any satin borders or finishing seams, but be sure to use a slightly longer stitch length for decorative areas to reduce perforation.

When the embroidery is complete, carefully remove the project from the hoop and tear away the stabilizer.

For the eye openings or elastic holes, use a small sharp pair of scissors or a buttonhole chisel to cut them open. These details can be difficult to access with a seam ripper, so take your time and be precise.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Thread elastic or ribbon through the buttonholes, and your ITH Halloween masks are ready to wear!

There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating individual quilt blocks that stand on their own as finished pieces, especially when every detail is designed and stitched by you. In this project, we used Hatch Embroidery to design and stitch four free-standing seasonal quilt blocks, each representing Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter.

From digitizing expressive motifs to adding embroidered borders and personalized bindings, each block was completed as its own mini quilt. With thoughtful planning, creative use of stitch types, and powerful tools in Hatch, we ended up with a cohesive set of seasonal blocks that are both decorative and meaningful.

Here’s how we brought them to life, from the first design idea to the final stitched result.

Digitizing the Quilt Blocks and Borders in Hatch Embroidery

Each of the four quilt blocks was digitized individually in Hatch Embroidery, with a unique design inspired by one of the seasons. Rather than relying on literal elements or text, we brought the essence of each season to life through thoughtful use of colors, shapes, patterns, and textures.

What We Used:

Contour Stitch: This dynamic stitch was perfect for adding soft, flowing lines and natural movement to each design, ideal for florals, leaves, or snowdrift-inspired patterns.

Motif Fills: Each block featured a variety of motif fills, chosen specifically to reflect seasonal feelings, floral for Spring, leafy for Summer, warm for Autumn, and delicate and cool for Winter.

Ambience Quilting: To give each block depth without crowding the design, we used Hatch’s Ambience Quilting tool to generate decorative background quilting automatically. This made the blocks feel rich and complete, even before adding borders or final assembly.

Lettering: Text was not added to the blocks themselves, instead, the seasonal words were reserved for the final binding stage, allowing the art in each block to speak for itself.

Each block and each of its four border pieces (top, bottom, left, right) was digitized separately. This allowed us full control over layout, stitch density, and finishing.

Stitching: Blocks and Borders Hooped Separately

After digitizing, we stitched out all components: four blocks and their surrounding borders, each hooped and stitched individually.

This process offered greater precision during hooping and ensured each element maintained its shape and stability.

Stitching Tips:

Stabilizer & Fabric Choice: We used a consistent background fabric and cut-away stabilizer for all pieces. Batting was included to give the finished quilt body and softness.

Thread Consistency: While each block used different colors to match the seasonal mood, we worked from a unified palette. This helped the blocks feel cohesive while still allowing each to have its own personality.

Stitch Tests First: Because motif fills and contour stitches behave differently depending on fabric and density, we ran test stitch-outs to make sure each block looked polished and properly balanced.

Assembling the Blocks and Borders

With each block and its four borders complete, we began the layout and assembly.

Each block was framed by its own embroidered border pieces, sewn in a picture frame style: top, bottom, left, and right. The borders added visual space around the central motif, enhancing its impact and giving the blocks a clean, structured format.

Assembly Tips:

Rotary Cutter for Precision: A cutting wheel was essential for trimming each piece cleanly and evenly. Straight edges made stitching much smoother and ensured all blocks aligned perfectly.

Remove Batting from Seams: Before joining borders to blocks (and blocks to each other if you are creating a 4 block quilt), we trimmed away the batting from seam allowances. This kept the final quilt much flatter and easier to work with.

Alternate Seam Directions: Nesting the seams alternating which way each seam was pressed—reduced bulk and helped everything sit more evenly when layered.

Binding: Final Touches That Tie It All Together

We created individual bindings around each block, adding the final design element that brought everything full circle.

The bindings were made from the same fabric as the quilt blocks to maintain a seamless look. But what truly set them apart were two finishing touches:

Seasonal Lettering: Using Hatch’s Lettering tools, we embroidered the name of each season Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter — into the binding for each block. This was the only place the text appeared, allowing the blocks themselves to remain purely visual and open to interpretation.

Quilting with Ambience Quilting: Around each embroidered season name, we used Ambience Quilting to create subtle concentric stitch patterns. These circular ripples framed the lettering beautifully and added extra dimension to the binding without overwhelming the design.

Creating the Featured Linework Embroidery Rabbit & Mother and Child Designs

Preparing the artwork

Before bringing the images into Hatch, the photos were first converted into simple linework drawings. While this step isn’t strictly required, it’s a helpful way to visualize how a photograph or sketch can be translated into clean, embroidery-ready outlines. It also allows for greater control over the final design and helps simplify the digitizing process.

Digitizing the design

To create a buttonhole:

• Select a decorative fabric depending on the weight.
• Iron on an interfacing to help with fraying and ease of cutting.
• Create the buttonhole to the required size. This will assist in selecting the appropriate motif.
• Resequence the motif so it stitches before the buttonhole for a clean and polished look.

Designing the Easter Bunny Cutlery Holder

We wanted a project that was both functional and adorable, making this Easter Bunny cutlery holder the perfect choice! The soft pink gingham fabric provided a delightful spring aesthetic, while the decorative buttonhole loops ensured the utensils were securely in place.

The design options are endless—you can create an outline of any shape, whether it's a bunny, flowers, or an Easter egg. The outline of the shape can also vary, using different stitch types such as run stitch, backstitch, or motif run.

To enhance the design and facilitate cutting:

Create an offset from your design to ensure a neater cutout.

Slip a matching piece of fabric the same size as your design under the hoop and use a matching bobbin. This way, when the design is finished and cut out, you can’t tell the front from the back.

Embroidery Process

With the design in place, we moved on to the embroidery phase. Hatch Embroidery Digitizer made it easy to control the stitch types and densities. We used a running stitch for the bunny’s outline and an offset stitch for cutting, along with a motif run for the buttonhole loops. This combination ensured a delicate and decorative finish while maintaining a clean and functional design.

Once the embroidery was complete, the buttonholes were carefully placed and stitched, ensuring they didn’t interfere with the overall aesthetic but remained functional.

Assembling the Cutlery Holder

Once the embroidery was finished, we cut out the bunny shapes. The buttonhole loops were then used to secure the cutlery, adding a unique touch to each place setting.

Tip: Put a vertical pin at the end of the buttonhole before cutting it with an unpicker. This prevents you from making the hole too big and cutting into the vertical stitches. You could also use a buttonhole chisel or scissors to cut the buttonholes open.
