Terry toweling is a favorite among embroiderers because it’s easy to find, can be used in many ways, and is simple to work with. These towels make great decorations and can handle regular use without getting damaged. Plus, they’re perfect for creating personalized gifts! Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, if you want to create cute designs, towel embroidery is just what you need. Join us as we explore the world of towel embroidery and have fun bringing your ideas to life!

1. Wash and dry your towel beforehand

Before you start embroidering on towels, remember to wash your towel first. This step is crucial to ensure a clean surface for your embroidery. By washing the towel beforehand, you remove any dirt, oils, or residues that may interfere with the stitching process. So, make sure to give your towel a good wash, and then you’ll be all set to create beautiful embroidered designs on it.

2. Use the Laydown Stitch tool

The Laydown Stitch tool in Hatch Embroidery creates a base layer of light grid style fill that is placed under lettering, monograms, or any other embroidery designs. It is automatically placed to be stitched out first. It holds down the high pile of towels to allow the embroidery design to stand out more.

It is best to choose embroidery designs with solid stitching because delicate or thin stitches will get lost in the towel's texture. Solid patterns and stitching are more stable and are better suited to the traditional wear and tear that comes with toweling.

3. Play around with placement, and use what works for you!

Centre your design approximately 4 inches above the lower border of your towel. This is the standard placement for larger ones like bath towels or beach towels and will look great when folded. Our handy placement guide for monograms is also a great reference tool.

4. Use an 11 or 14 sized needle

When embroidering on towels a 14-needle is extra sharp and is great for penetrating fabric without distressing it. These are the sizes that are generally recommended however they are not universal. Instead, it is more advisable to use these sizes as a starting point and go wider or narrower from there. Again, it’s about trial and error and using what feels comfortable for you.

5. Use a tear-away stabilizer

Whilst you can basically use any stabilizer for towels, using a tear-away stabilizer will give you the tidiest finish. Just slide a sheet of the stabilizer under your hoop once it’s attached to your machine.

6. But there are alternatives...

7. Use a water-soluble topping

If you are not using the Laydown Stitch tool, it is recommended that you use a water-soluble topping. This is to ensure your stitches don’t get lost or sink into your towel. The topping will sit over your design as your machine does the work. It is a clear plastic material that can be easily removed by tearing and then wiping the remnants away with a damp washcloth.

8. 'Float' your towel

Sometimes your towel may be too thick to hoop together with your stabilizer and topping. If this is the case, hoop cut-away stabilizer and simply lay the towel on top of it instead of hooping it. This is called ‘floating’.

9. Use a spray-on adhesive

If you decide to float your material, you can use spray-on adhesive to keep your fabric attached to the stabilizer while you are embroidering. This will help your layers stay in place and it won’t add any distress to your items.

Note: some embroiderers use pins instead.

10. Use a design template

This will ensure your placement comes out perfectly. There are templates that come with software and some that come with the embroidery machines. If your software or machine does not come with a template you can purchase them or download a basic one from the internet. Your Hatch Embroidery software will allow you to print out the design with reference marks that you can use as a template.

Creating Simple Monograms in Hatch Embroidery Software – FREE Monogram Design

Hatch Embroidery Personalizer makes it easy to create custom monograms that reflect your personal style. In this guide, you’ll learn how to design a monogram quickly using the built-in Monogram Design Templates included with the software. Most monograms can be customized with just a few simple adjustments, such as changing the letters, choosing a different embroidery font, or resizing the design. We’ll walk through the key steps involved, so you can decide which techniques to use when creating your own personalized monogram embroidery designs.

Creating a Monogram in Hatch is Easy as 1,2,3!

1. Open a blank design
2. Select one of the 69 included Monogram Design Style templates
3. Make changes (if desired)

Parts of a Monogram

The monogram creates a single “monogram object”. It is grouped together and consists of several “elements”.

Preparing Your File

First you need to open a new blank file. Click the File menu, then select New Blank Design. Save the new design file to desired name (we saved this one as Hatch monogram_W_single color.EMB). Set up your machine and hoop.

Creating Your Monogram

Click on the Lettering/Monogram Toolbox then click on Monogramming tool. You will see the Monogramming Docker on the Right side open up.

Using the Design Tab to Select a Monogram Template

You will find the Design Tab in the Monogram Docker on the right side of the screen. Click on “Designs” tab if not open (1), then click on “Border and Ornaments” Category (2). Select the round monogram design template “Style19bo” (3). You will see the monogram design template appear in the working field.

Hatch Tip: Before you can make changes to the design it must be selected first. Otherwise the software does not know what you want to make changes to.

Using the Lettering Tab to Select Your Letter of Choice

Click on the “Letters” Tab. Make sure your monogram is selected by clicking on it in the design working window.

Changing Letters to a Single Letter

To do this, move your mouse cursor to the right of the ABC letters, then click backspace on your keyboard to remove the ABC. Then type your single letter of choice. Make sure your monogram is still selected. If not, select it by clicking on it in the design working window. Select the straight baseline by using Style #4.

Selecting Your Font of Choice

Note: We used the Schoolbook font in our sample on Facebook which is included with the Digitizer level. If you do not have this font, select any other font style you like from within your list.

Keep your monogram selected. Moving down,select 1.5 in.(38mm) height. You are now finished setting up the lettering for your monogramming.
Be sure to press the “Tab” key when you have made changes inside the Docker so that you can see them on your working screen.

Hatch Tip: You can easily look up the recommended size range for your selected font up in the built-in software documentation! Without anything selected in your design window hoover your mouse over the monogramming tool listed under the Lettering/Monogramming Toolbox. Press F1 on your keyboard. The Hatch documentation will open. Click on the Lettering topic on the left side and then click on “Included fonts”. Scroll to find the font of your choice. You will see the minimum and maximum recommended letter sizes for that font type in both inches (in) and millimeters (mm)

Using the Ornaments Tab to Select Your Ornament of Choice

Click on the Ornaments Tab. Scroll to the top of the Docker if necessary.

Note: What is the difference in “Add, Delete, Change”?

Add – will add a second ornament to your monogram design
Delete – will delete the highlighted ornament in the list
Change – will allow you to change the highlighted ornament in the list

“Changing” the Ornament for This Design

Make sure your monogram is still selected. If not, select it by clicking on it in the design working window. If you do not see an Ornament listed in the Ornaments Tab, this means you do not have your monogram design selected. It does not know what you want to make changes to! Click on the ornament in the list to highlight if not already highlighted. Select “Change” tab, then select “From Motif”.

A dialog box will open. Select motif MO35b, then click “OK”. Your monogram will now look like this

You can leave it like this, or you can change the size and position of the ornament if desired.

Changing the Ornament Size or Position

Select your monogram so that the software knows you want to make changes to it. Scroll down the Docker with the Ornament Tab open until you get to the “Advanced” section. If you do not see anything listed under the “Advanced” section, click on the “Advanced” bar and it will open.

Let’s change the Anchor Ornament properties (settings):
If the lock is closed, click on it so that it will open. (1) This will allow you to set the width and height independently of each other. If the lock is closed your changes will be made proportionally in both width and height.
Change the width to desired settings. (2)
Change the Height to desired settings. (3)
Change the Margin to design settings. (4)
The Margin setting will reposition the ornament to the overall monogram object.

Hatch Tip: The anchor ornament is the main ornament position that all other ornaments, if added, will be based around for the placement. Notice, in the placement the Anchor is shown as highlighted if there is more than one ornament.

You can select other motifs of choice by clicking on the down arrow button and selecting another Category.

Changing Colors

In our project today we want to have only 1 color. However, at some time in the future you may want to have this ornament to stitch out in 3 colors. Therefore, let’s work ahead and now and save the Monogram in the multi-colors. Click File Menu, then Save design As ‘Hatch monogram_multi-colors.EMB’. Be sure to save as .EMB, so you can come back later to make changes easily if desired.

Stitching the Monogram with One Color
You have two options:
1. Stitch the multi-color design and ignore the color changes when your machine stops.
2. Change all the colors to one single color.

Note: In Hatch you have multiple ways you can the different tasks! Changing the thread colors is one of them.

Changing to One Color Using the Design Color Palette

First be sure to save your design to a different name so you do not overwrite the multi-color design. Click File Menu, then Save design As ‘Hatch monogram_single color.EMB’
Now click on the design to select, then click the desired color in the color palette at the bottom of your screen. All the monogram components will change to that color!

Changing to One Color Using the “My Threads” Docker

Click on “My Threads” Docker. You will see your threads listed.
Scroll to find the thread color you want, then double click. It’s done!

Note: If you have the Layout/Editor features, you can also change the colors in your Resequence Docker

Resizing the Monogram

Click on the monogram design to select it. Click on any of the 4 black resizing handles at the edges. (1)

Tip: If you want to resize the design in proportion, hold the “Shift” key while resizing.

Saving Your Final File to .EMB

Since you have already given it the right name, you can simply click on the “Save” icon in the top toolbar.

Exporting to Your Machine File Format

Click Output Design Toolbox, then click Export Design. Save to your machine format from the drop down list.

Embroidering Velvet Cushions for an Embossed Effect

Velvet is one of those fabrics that instantly elevates a project. Its rich texture and light-catching sheen make it a standout material for home décor, fashion, and accessories. But if you’ve ever tried to embroider velvet, you’ll know it can be a challenge, especially if you want to maintain that luxurious surface without crushing the pile. In this blog, we’ll show you how we created a set of elegant velvet cushions with an embossed look using Hatch Embroidery software, without ever hooping the fabric.

We used three beautiful chrysanthemum designs on a deep blue velvet, stitched with Backstitch and digitized using the Redwork tool. On the mustard velvet, we used Contour stitch to create a stylized ginkgo leaf pattern and Stemstitch for the stems. The result? Two sets of cushions with a subtle, tone-on-tone look that reads as both sophisticated and timeless.

Why Velvet + Embroidery Works (If Done Right)

Velvet isn’t just a pretty face, it’s also dense and plush, which can give embroidery an almost sculptural quality when you use the right stitch types. By using single-line stitch styles like Stem and Contour, you can create designs that sit lightly on the surface while still making a bold visual impact. And when you match the thread color closely to the velvet, you get an embossed or engraved look that’s stunning in its simplicity.

But the very texture that makes velvet so appealing is also what makes it tricky. Hoop it the wrong way, and you’ll flatten the pile. Use the wrong stabilizer, and your design could shift or sink. That’s why careful preparation is key.

Digitizing for an Embossed Effect

We created our embroidery designs in Hatch Embroidery software, choosing tools and stitch types that would enhance the luxurious look of velvet without overwhelming it.

Chrysanthemum Designs on Blue Velvet

For the blue cushions, we chose three chrysanthemum motifs. Using the Redwork tool in Hatch, we digitized the outline of each flower, allowing us to keep the stitch path efficient and clean. We then applied Backstitch to the outlines, which gave each petal soft dimension with a subtle raised effect.

Ginkgo Design on Mustard Velvet

On the mustard velvet cushions, we digitized a ginkgo leaf design using the Contour stitch and Stem stitch. The Contour stitch follows the shape of the object and creates graceful, curved lines that echo the natural veining of ginkgo leaves. The result was a set of bold, modern velvet cushions with flowing organic shapes that appear pressed into the fabric rather than stitched on top.

Stitching the Velvet Cushions

Floating the Fabric (No Hooping!)

One of the most important things we did to protect the fabric’s texture was to float the velvet rather than hoop it. Hooping velvet can crush the pile permanently, leaving unsightly marks that ruin the luxurious look.

Instead of hooping the velvet directly, we hooped a piece of medium-weight cut-away stabilizer and then floated the velvet on top, securing it with temporary adhesive spray. For extra stability, we also basted the velvet to the stabilizer using Hatch’s Basting Box feature. This kept everything in place during stitching without damaging the fabric.

Thread Choices for a Tone-on-Tone Look

To keep the look sophisticated and subtle, we chose thread colors that closely matched the fabric - deep navy for the blue velvet cushion, and golden ochre for the mustard velvet cushions. This tone-on-tone approach enhances the embossed effect and makes the stitching look like it’s part of the velvet itself, rather than sitting on top of it.

We used standard 40wt embroidery thread for both cushions. You could experiment with matte finish threads for an even softer look, or try metallics for a more decorative result, just be mindful of tension and needle type when working with specialty threads on velvet.

From Fabric to Finished Velvet Cushions

Once the embroidery was complete, we gently removed the stabilizer from the back and pressed the velvet from the reverse side using a pressing cloth and no steam. Avoid touching the embroidered side directly with an iron, as it could flatten your stitching or damage the pile.

Then we sewed the panels into cushion covers. For the ginkgo design, we opted for rectangular lumbar cushions to accentuate the horizontal flow of the leaves. The chrysanthemum cushions were finished as classic square pillows, perfect for a cozy corner or elegant lounge.

Before bringing the images into Hatch, the photos were first converted into simple linework drawings. Select a decorative fabric depending on the weight.
Iron on an interfacing to help with fraying and ease of cutting.

Designing the Easter Bunny Cutlery Holder

We wanted a project that was both functional and adorable, making this Easter Bunny cutlery holder the perfect choice! The soft pink gingham fabric provided a delightful spring aesthetic, while the decorative buttonhole loops ensured the utensils were securely in place.

The design options are endless—you can create an outline of any shape, whether it's a bunny, flowers, or an Easter egg. The outline of the shape can also vary, using different stitch types such as run stitch, backstitch, or motif run.

To enhance the design and facilitate cutting:

Create an offset from your design to ensure a neater cutout.

Slip a matching piece of fabric the same size as your design under the hoop and use a matching bobbin. This way, when the design is finished and cut out, you can’t tell the front from the back.

Embroidery Process

With the design in place, we moved on to the embroidery phase. Hatch Embroidery Digitizer made it easy to control the stitch types and densities. We used a running stitch for the bunny’s outline and an offset stitch for cutting, along with a motif run for the buttonhole loops. This combination ensured a delicate and decorative finish while maintaining a clean and functional design.

Once the embroidery was complete, the buttonholes were carefully placed and stitched, ensuring they didn’t interfere with the overall aesthetic but remained functional.

Assembling the Cutlery Holder

Once the embroidery was finished, we cut out the bunny shapes. The buttonhole loops were then used to secure the cutlery, adding a unique touch to each place setting.

Tip: Put a vertical pin at the end of the buttonhole before cutting it with an unpicker. This prevents you from making the hole too big and cutting into the vertical stitches. You could also use a buttonhole chisel or scissors to cut the buttonholes open.

With the design ready, the neoprene fabric was hooped with a sturdy stabilizer and placed in the embroidery machine. Careful attention was paid to thread tension and machine speed. The design stitched out beautifully, with the contrasting colors and raised textures adding a lovely dimensional effect.

Assembling the Embroidered Beer Cozy

Once the embroidery was complete, the fabric was carefully trimmed for assembly. Using a sewing machine, the sides were stitched together with a 4 mm wide and 1.8 mm long zigzag stitch with the stubby turned inside out.

The final product was both sturdy and stylish, ready to keep beverages cool and festive during St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
